My son Dr. James Bingham from Boise Idaho came to visit us here in Layton Utah with his family. While he was here he decided he and his children needed to take their overweight and out of shape grandpa on a hike up Adams Canyon to the waterfall about 1 1/2 miles up a steep trail in the mountains just East of Layton. My son is a real health nut and he has been trying get me to get back into the gym and lose weight for years. He wanted his children to grow up and know their grandpa and enjoy his company before something happened to him like a heart attack. So I accepted the challenge and headed out on a very hot Utah summer day thinking since the very young 4 and 5 year old grandchildren would not be able to go very fast and maybe with some luck they would poop out and want to go back home.

The start of the trail goes up at a steep 70 degree angle for about 100 feet and then it levels off when you reach the Bonneville Shoreline Trail which is much easier climbing. All I had to do was reach that part of the trail. I could not even get started! I would go maybe 5 feet and stop to rest. I would tell my son and grandson’s “oh I’m just enjoying the view just give me a minute” but after awhile my stalling didn’t work. My 5 year old grandson Connor who lives with me says “come on papa come on let’s go!” I was so embarrassed to have a 5 year old leave me in the dust. I decided that day and that minute that I was going to change my life no matter what it took and since I was raising him I had to change if I wanted to do things with him.

I was adding 10 pounds or more every year to my body and at the rate I was going to weigh 300 pounds in less than 3 years. I had problems with Berretts disease which is pre-cancer of the esophagus caused by acid reflux. I had sleep apnea, high cholesterol and many other physical issues. My son Jim “The Doc” who I had a lot of love and respect for got me on this program and I lost 60 pounds in 3 months!* Due to my weight loss my cholesterol and blood pressure have improved. After losing the weight I started working out every day in the gym not pushing too fast or too hard but enough to gradually get my body back into shape. One year later I returned to that mountain with my grandchildren to hike up to that beautiful waterfall with them. It was another 100 degree afternoon and after about 15 minutes my grandson Connor says “papa will you carry me?” What! That was a highlight of my life! I threw him on my shoulders and ran to the top of the mountain dripping sweat down my head all the way, the sweat was so bad that he could hardly hang on! The next summer I climbed the highest freestanding mountain in the World “Kilimanjaro” in Africa, and when I reached the summit I had tears of joy in my eyes. I’m 62 years old and have two more goals on my bucket list, the Senior Games and Mt. Everest in 4 1/2 years!

With over 13,000 hours of Pilot In Command time and over 30 years of experience, you can imagine how devestating it was to be fired from my charter pilot job for being TOO FAT!
